Prison Island


The island has been a former quarantine hospital of the last century, where you can follow a path around the island, which is bordered by  Frangipani trees and which former patient used for their evening stroll. In 1883, a prison was erected on the island, which was never used.  Sultan Said imported giant tortoises from the Seychelles to Zanzibar,  which you might spot with a bit of luck.

Changuu island, which is also called prison island, is an island situated prison-islandin  the west of Zanzibar and visible from stone town.


The island grew into a little tourist resort, where you are able to relax and also might be  even able to spot the big aldabra tortoise or some of the beautiful  peacocks.


Around the beautiful coral reefs, you are able to swim, dive or  snorkel.

Prison Island-Diving

The island lies just off the Old Stone Town, it is also a home to giant land tortoises that were imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century.

Now it is more commonly known as a home of Zanzibar`s Giant Aldabran Tortoise colony, some of which are over a hundred years old!

This endangered  species came to Zanzibar as a gift from the government of the  Seychelles.

Once on the island, you have the opportunity to feed and pet the  tortoises,  if you have time you may also like to take a stroll through  the forested interior where you will see a wide variety of birds,  colourful peacocks, bats, and beautiful butterflies. Keep your eyes  peeled too for the shy and elusive Duikers an unusual tiny antelope  species.
